We’ll be tasting Valdelena Wines, crafted with some of the most aromatic grapes in Spain. Four different wines will be sampled. You’ll find a sure match.

2010 Valdelena White
A fresh Verdejo displaying the characteristics of the Northern climate, accumulating more aromatic substances and more acidity than most Verdejo varietals.
Bright yellow-green color. Intense aromas of herbs and fruits. Very crisp and steely with the slight bitter note characteristic of Verdejo.
Great match with seafood, sushi, and simple grilled fish. Try it with seafood paella.

2010 Valdelena Rose
Valdelena Rose is a point of reference of the traditional winemaking of Tierra de Leon in Northern Spain. A touch of carbonic maceration during the winemaking brings a light spark to the wine, enhancing Prieto Picudo’s freshness.
A rosé wine with more color, more body, and more aromatic intensity than most rosés. Beautiful red raspberry color, with notes of red fruit, pears and flowers. Crisp in the mouth with an added freshness from the carbonic presence and an intense fruity aftertaste.
The perfect drink with appetizers, spicy dishes, and poultry. Try it with chicken wings, pizza and oriental dishes.

2010 Valdelena Unoaked Red
The Prieto Picudo grape has a very defined own personality, described as one of the most aromatic varieties in Spain. Valdelena red is a display of this Northern Spain variety of intense garnet color with purple shades. With its intense aroma of ripe red fruits and natural acidity, the wine offers everything from the moment you uncork the bottle.
Pairs best with sausages, antipasto, cold cuts, and grilled pork.

2010 Valdelena Oaked Red
Red garnet with ruby shades. Intense jammy red fruits, sweet vanilla and coconut aromatics. The Prieto Picudo grape aromatics are complemented with the three month American Oak aging.  A fresh oaked red, dry and balanced, with an amazing fruit presence for an oaked wine.
Goes well with cheese, cured meats, and grilled meats.

Bodegas Melgarajo implemented an innovative approach to recover a local tradition.

The town of Melgar de Abajo in Valladolid has a long history of wine making mainly with red Prieto Picudo and white Verdejo grapes. About 150 landowners, almost everyone in town,  concentrated their land titles in a single 500-acre emblematic vineyard known as Valdeleña, historically the best location in the municipality. So far they have planted about 150 acres with a modern setup, aimed to create premium wines. Their Prieto Picudo Rose is one of the best expressions of the grape. The traditional winemaking includes the “Madreo”, creating “Vinos Madreados”, a technique combining carbonic maceration during fermentation.

Besides recovering the wine industry in the town, the enterprise has been a remarkable community building project. The whole town gets together for the harvest fest, a day of harvesting and celebrations. It’s a great educational tool for the youngsters and an example of creative sustainability.

The winery is involved in R&D projects with local universities to recover two native grapes: “Prieto Picudo Oval” and “Negra Sauri”. Experimental vinification of these varieties is underway.
