Demencia Wine has been a dream come true. On numerous occasions we have been accused of being an idealistic project, with a free spirit, a mystical touch and creativity.
A project that has encouraged us to experiment with different interpretations of our native variety: the Mencia grapes.
These dreams and trials have allowed us to learn ways towards new paths, new winemaking profiles, new methods to understand the Mencia grapes.
Night, dreams, imagination, madness, adaptation to the environment.
These concepts have always been our motivation, and they are also very present in our PYJAMA.
PYJAMA seeks a more joyful understanding of the Mencia; always maintaining the freshness and elegance, obtaining a less serious wine, less forceful, and perhaps younger.
A wine to drink and share, the basic things to do with a wine. They say a good wine is only good when you like it. There is no secret under our PYJAMA: pure pleasure.
Produced with grapes of the Mencia variety. The vineyards are located in Villadecanes and Villafranca del Bierzo, with complementary orientations and soil compositions.
During the year 2011 we enjoyed a pleasant summer, with rainfall towards the end. The harvest was early and short.
Fermentation was achieved in 2500 liter tanks, with an average temperature of 25 ° C, relying on the local wild yeasts. High density devatting with a significant presence of sugars, completing the fermentation without a cap.
Aging for about five months in second and third year French oak barrels, complemented by the presence of fine lees, and racking three times with mild aeration. The final blend includes a small portion of the 2010 vintage, in search of complexity and refinement.
The wine was bottled on August 9, 2011, with a total production of 6,700 bottles.
Bierzo’s Alzheimer’s Family Association and the winery “Demencia de Autor” have signed a cooperation agreement in the Earl’s Hall of Arms of Ponferrada’s Templar Castle, last Thursday April 25th, presenting a charitable wine named “Demencia de Mencia”.
Ruben Martinez, president of the association, and Nacho Leon, with Demencia Wine staged the agreement after underlining the health benefits of wine in moderation and the importance of a healthy diet. They also explained that the bottles will be sold at the price of 20 euros ($26 USD) each with all the profits benefiting the Alzheimer’s Family Association.
The signing was followed by the presentation “Neurogastronomy in the XXI Century: The Importance of Diet for Neurological Health and Plasticity”, by Dr. Angel Fernandez Diez, a performance of the legendary Bierzo’s singer Amancio Prada, and a wine tasting of “Demencia de Mencia”.
Nacho Leon relates his winegrowing project based on small plots of old vines, to the legacy of the elders. Without a doubt, the previous generations tending these vines and the land is the main reason we can enjoy wines like Demecia Wine.
Nacho is honored for the opportunity to give back to the community with this initiative of the Alzheimer’s Family Association.
Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, North America’s largest charitable wine competition.

Children touched by cancer, HIV/AIDS, and violence gather at their recreational facility on beautiful Keuka Lake (Finger Lakes, central NY) to spark new smiles, re-kindle friendships and enjoy a week where they can simply be kids.
The cultural center Palacio Quintanar, in Segovia, Spain, inaugurated the exhibition “Design Di Vino”
“Design Di Vino” is the title of the new exhibition Palacio Quintanar inaugurated last Friday June 29th This multidisciplinary display contains the graphic image and corporate identity, history and key references of an important selection of Castilla and Leon wineries. It also incorporates the new proposals that the local wine sector uses to compete in the international scene with a very careful product that identifies the land and the characteristic craft of the region. A total of 22 wineries are involved exhibiting more than 70 bottles, labels, capsules and closures, accompanied by photographs, graphics, text, and videos.
The exhibition is part of the cycle Castile and Leon Wines: Wines of Europe, organized in collaboration with the Association Eno-solidary Hundred Smiles & C2C Project, which has also included the international tasting “Riesling Tag”, the solidary wine workshop ” Hundred Smiles Label ” and will offer a wine tasting in July featuring the leading winemakers in the area. The exhibition will remain open until Thursday July 26, 2012.
A thank you note translated from the Blog “The Wine Side“.
In case somebody does not know, Nacho is a poet. When he speaks of wine, when he drinks wine, when he dreams about wine. With his “wine”. To be a poet one has to be a bit fool. What the hell, one has to be really nuts. And to make a wine the way he does in these times … “insane”. That’s why he named his wine “Demencia”. The winery “Demencia de Autor” is a personal project, artisan (again), respectful, honest and freaking amazing. It is 100% Mencia, is earth, blood, sweat, tears. It is native variety, passion for what you do, dedication, respect, and showing your balls creating about 6,000 bottles each year with no other company than the land, the vine, the moon … and a chestnut tree at the top of the vineyard. For all that and much more (The Rebellion of the Plum Tree): THANKS!!!!
Intense purple red color with aromas of gentle flowers (magnolia), and red and black fruits with sweet red pepper. In the mouth, silky, elegant and gentle; delicate to the palate but with a surprising touch of acidity and tannins at the center of the fruits (strawberries, blackberries and fresh plums). Rounded with a touch of flowers at the end. A long mineral finih that blends with the noble tannins and licorice. Excellent acidity which provides freshness.
Intense garnet with strong strong depth of color. Fresh and fruity nose with shades of herbs and mountain flowers (lavender, rose marry and thyme). In the mouth very elegant, complex, balanced with gentle tannins. Ripen red fruits. Rosemary and licorice. Fresh at the end, bringing again wonderful aromas
